New and exciting things are coming to the Esports team and arena, thanks to the new Esports Head Coach, Nicholas Matawa. Mr. Matawa said, “I believe that the ‘E’ in Esports does not stand for electronics, it stands for everybody. For your Esports to succeed on a college campus, you need an A, a B, and two Cs. Your academics, broadcasting, your competition, and your community.” Due to Mr. Matawa’s beliefs, he has new plans that we should all take notice of to see how the Esports and arena changes in the next year. He also plans to change the design of the Esports arena to make it more dynamic, pleasing to the eye, and more comfortable for future guests and gamers.

For his academic part of his belief, he is going to try to bring a course to USC Upstate that focuses on careers that revolve around gaming, so students can still game, socialize, and pursue their career. For broadcasting, Mr. Matawa is going to be speaking to other students about partnerships to get higher-grade broadcasting equipment. When the Esports team competes, they can elevate the immediate campus space when they broadcast it across the campus and in higher definition.

For the two Cs, competition and community, the Esports team with be trying to join all types of competition from now from local to national. USC Upstate will be competing against colleges larger than ours since they have the capacity to do so. For our community, Mr. Matawa wants to foster a safe and secure community where anyone can join. To do so, he will be creating multiple events and inside communities, such as a Minecraft server, Mario Party nights, and Marvel Rival nights, to gain a variety of different gamers and show that everyone is welcome.
