In honor of David Lynch and his recent passing, I’m going to be reviewing his 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
Based on the show Twin Peaks also by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the film follows FBI Agent Desmond attempting to solve the murder of Teresa Banks. A year later, after suddenly disappearing, we follow the days leading up to the death of Lara Palmer.
The film was originally not well received, Entertainment Weekly writes, “Fire Walk With Me suffered a polarizing, largely negative reaction on its initial release, earning the un-coveted ‘booed at Cannes’ stamp of failure” (Franich). However, in recent years it has gained steady popularity.
The acting was very strong in this film, especially that of Sheryl Lee, who portrays Lara Palmer. Other actors include Ray Wise, playing the murderer Leland Palmer, Dana Ashbrook, playing the other murderer Bobby Briggs, and David Bowie, playing Phillip Jefferies.
Lynch did an incredible job capturing the unsettling nature of the town and the characters, putting the audience on edge. The sound design and cinematography complement the odd town and the other worldly dream sequences.
Overall, I rate this film as 4/5. Since the film is based off the TV show, the first two seasons are essential viewing to be able to follow the movie. After that, I would recommend this film. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is available to stream on Max.
