This week, I sat down to interview USC Upstate senior Cayden Nixon. I had the opportunity to work alongside Cayden in the musical, RENT, last year, and was blown away by her ASL interpretation of the score. I was curious to learn more about Cayden and how she has spent her time here at Upstate, as well as what she would like to do in the future.

What is your major/minor?

CAYDEN:  My major is Mass Communications, and my minor is ASL Interpreting.

What has been your favorite thing about USC Upstate?

CAYDEN: Being able to partner the ASL club with Upstate’s theatre program.

Are you involved in any clubs here at Upstate?

CAYDEN:  I am involved in the ASL club and Spectrum.

What do you like to do in your free time?

CAYDEN: I enjoy theatre, drawing, and writing fiction-based stories.

What has been your favorite class at Upstate?

CAYDEN: Feminist Disability Studies and Human Anthropology classes because they teach how we can work against the stigma and work together as humans.

What are your plans after graduation?

CAYDEN: I plan to get certified to interpret ASL.

Lastly, do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?

CAYDEN: Take things day by day. College goes by insanely fast, so take time to enjoy the friendships and experiences.
