The University of South Carolina Upstate Spartans Baseball team approaches the new season with a new schedule, new opportunities, and a new coach at the helm.
Kane Sweeney was promoted to being the Head Baseball Coach in the Summer of 2024, after previously being an associate head coach in the previous season. The 2025 season will be Sweeney’s sixth overall at USC Upstate.
Sweeney has had an impressive baseball career not only as a coach, but as a player. A Morehead State alum, he was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2015 (UpstateSpartans).
The Spartans baseball team finished the 2024 season as Runner-Up in the Big South Conference, and the Big South Preseason Poll has the Spartans slated to finish second in the conference.
With a mix of returning players and new faces, the anticipation has built at Cleveland S. Harley Park since the conclusion of last season. Coach Sweeney discusses his first team as a head coach when saying “I’m really excited about this group. There’s a lot of new around our program; new players, new coach, some new facility upgrades. It is an exciting time to be a fan of USC Upstate Baseball. We’ve been very successful the past few years, but we want more. This program expects to be a constant in the NCAA tournament every year moving forward. We will play an exciting brand of baseball. We have a lot of versatility on both sides of the ball and are really athletic. It’s a really fun group to coach and I’m excited to watch these guys go compete day in and day out.”
After Opening Weekend at USC Upstate, the Spartans will return to Cleveland S. Harley Park on Friday, February 21st at 3pm to take on the Bowling Green State University Falcons, as a part of the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic. They will also play on Saturday the 22nd at 2pm against Le Moyne. Coach Sweeney and his group will wrap up on Sunday, playing the Falcons again at 1pm.
All on campus baseball games are free for Spartans and the community to attend.
