Based on the novel of the same name by Alice Walker and the 2005 musical adaptation, director Blitz Bazawule brings this incredible musical to life. This film is about torn sisters Celie and Nettie, as they both begin to find themselves.

The story is heartbreaking, and at the start of the film Celie has her newborn child taken from her to be sent elsewhere. She is then forced into a marriage with an abusive husband, and must raise his children as her own, all while longing for her sister.

The film has a stacked cast, with incredible performances by well-known stars. Actors include Fantasia Barrino as Celie, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, and Halle Bailey as young Nettie.

Choreography was done by the iconic Fatima Robinson, whose prior credits include the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime show and Beyonce’s 2022 performance of “Be Alive.” The choreography was stunning, adding to the feeling of the music and the characters.

Dan Lausten was the cinematographer for this film, which felt clunky at times, but overall was good. The lighting for this film was also phenomenal, featuring bright colors to compliment the costume design, done by Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, and the larger-than-life choreography.

Overall, I rate this film 4/5. It is a good movie adaptation of the staged musical about overcoming hardship. It is available to stream on Max and to purchase on AppleTV.
