As USC Upstate wraps up their 2024-2025 Men’s and Women’s Basketball season, they both finish with key wins to gain momentum heading into Big South Tournament play.
The Spartans’ Men’s Team will kick off tournament action in Game 1 on Wednesday, March 5th, taking on the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at 7:30pm Eastern.
The Women’s Team received a first-round bye after their upset win against the Lancers at Longwood University on Saturday, March 1, and will face that same team in the semifinals on Thursday, March 6 at 6:00pm as the 7th seed.
Both teams look to make a deep run in the tournament, where the Conference Champion receives an automatic bid into the 64-field NCAA Tournament, better known as “March Madness.”
Cali Levine, a junior on the women’s team discusses the importance of the tournament when she says, “We’ve been preparing for this moment since June, so this opportunity is very exciting to be able to compete alongside one another for the first ever USC Upstate WBB Championship. As a team we’re going into the tournament extremely confident, winning 4 out of our last 6 conference games with a lot of trust within each other and what we are capable of. This is a great opportunity for us to continue to compete and put our culture on display to go and win 3 games in March!”
Both teams picked up crucial wins in the second half of conference play. The men pulled out an upset win at Charleston Southern. The women finished the season winning 4 of their last 6 conference games, securing the first-round bye. Their wins included the number 2 seed, Longwood, as well as Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville, and Winthrop.
In March, the tournament is anyone’s game. It is a refresh, a level playing field, and a chance to make history. Both teams look to do so in Johnson City, Tennessee, while showing what the Spartan Spirit truly is.
