Greg Kwedar’s newest prison film is unforgettable. Sing Sing (2023) is based on the true story of John “Divine G” Whitfield, who wrongfully served 25 years in the Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
Written by Clint Bentley, Greg Kwedar, Clarence Maclin, and John “Divine G” Whitfield, this film was nominated for almost 200 awards, winning a total of 68.

Divine G, played by Colman Domingo, is a part of the prison’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program. From there, we meet various people in the program, including Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, Mike Mike, and D Dan.

The film is based on the true story of John Whitfield, and many of the actors in the film play themselves, reflecting their experiences in prison. While Whitfield is played by Domingo, he does make a cameo in the later part of the film. This made the performances feel deeper and more authentic.

Cinematography was powerful, with director of photography Pat Scola making the film feel personal but keeping distance when needed. Composer Bryce Dessner created a beautiful score to accompany the film, featuring strong cello solos that stick after the film.

This film highlights prisoners’ lives and their stories to remind us that they are people too. It also highlights the importance of the arts in rehabilitation and how crucial they are to humanity.
Overall, I rate this film 5/5. Its impactful storytelling is incredible, and the performances were phenomenal. Sing Sing (2023) is available to stream on Max and to purchase on AppleTV.
