It’s conference play in the Big South Conference, and it shined bright this past weekend (April 11-April 13) as USC Upstate played host to their in-state rivals of Winthrop University.

With an already intense rivalry, the stakes rose as Upstate’s previous baseball coach left Upstate in the offseason to join the War Eagles.

It built up to be a perfect weekend. Saturday was Alumni Day for the baseball team, so players who went professional were able to come back and watch a great matchup all around.

The Spartans did not shy away from the occasion. They poured in 46 runs throughout the weekend, holding Winthrop to just 8 runs total. The sweep puts Upstate in the top half of the Big South Conference standings, as this weekend proved the talent the Spartans put on the field, and the true hopes of a championship to arise.

While every player contributed in some way to the offensive outpour, Junior First Basemen Wylie Waters accounted for 13 runs batted in on the weekend. When he spoke about the energy the team had for the matchup he said, “We wanted to keep high level energy the whole game and set the tone early which Coach Sweeney emphasizes a lot for the team.”

The Spartans are back at home from April 17-April 19 as they face the University of North Carolina Greensboro in a non-conference matchup.

All games on campus at Harley Park are free to attend courtesy of Ingles, with concessions being available, and Sully Steamer’s selling sandwiches at most Saturday games for the remainder of the year.
