The Fine Arts and Communication Studies (FACS) department recently welcomed its new chair, Bridget Kirkland.

A Professor of Graphic Design and Co-Director of Studio Upstate, Kirkland is the first visual art professor to hold the position.

After graduating with her BA in graphic design, Kirkland worked in a variety of graphic design firms, offices, as well as freelance work. Starting in 2005, a colleague working at Upstate invited her to help teach graphics classes. This launched her love for higher education.

When the 2008 recession hit, Kirkland made the decision to go back to school and pursue her M.F.A. in graphic design at Winthrop University. After graduating she applied as an adjunct professor at Upstate, where she has taught for 20 years.

“This is more than just a university for students, this is a place away from our
family so why not make it a nice place. It’s a place I am proud to work at,” Kirkland said.

Kirkland said she has always dreamed of being FACS chair. After being promoted to professor she felt empowered to apply for the position, taking the place of former chair Dr. Emily Kofoed.

“I thought about it for years, but I always thought ‘I would never get that.’, ” Kirkland said.

Kirkland says her prior office work and time at Upstate will aid her with the responsibilities of being chair. One of her goals is to increase enrollment for the FACS department, through recruitment and marketing campaigns.

To reach the new FACS chair, students can email or visit Kirkland’s office in HPAC 125C.
