Jon M. Chu’s newest film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Wicked is nothing short of stunning. Featuring incredible performances from a star-studded cast and gorgeous set and costume design, the film is captivating from start to finish.
Based on the 2003 musical by Steven Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which itself is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, the film provides a backstory to the Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda the Good before the events of The Wizard of Oz.
An important part of this film is its casting. Featuring stars such as Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. Erivo brings a new take to her character, taking a step away from other versions of Elphaba. Grande has an incredible performance as Glinda, capturing the essence of her character and breathing new life into the role.
The design of the film is another star itself. Set decorator Lee Sandales brought the world of Oz and Shiz to life, with bright colors and stunning architecture, it was nothing short of fantastic. Costume designer Paul Tazewell did a phenomenal job, adding movement that was complimented by the choreography.
Overall, I rate this film 5/5. This film takes an already-known musical and updates it for a new audience, taking its time to tell the story. The second film Wicked: For Good is set for release November 21, 2025. In the meantime, Wicked (2024) is available to stream on Peacock, or to purchase or rent on Amazon Prime.
