With a new academic year, comes a new athletic year.
This year, USC Upstate’s Men’s Soccer looks to write their own story under new head coach Michael Antoniewicz.
Antoniewicz became leader of the program after serving at Coker University. He brings a new mentality and spirit to the Spartan Squad, which is full of new faces and a new energy as the season begins.
After starting the season off with a tie against a tough Georgia State opponent, Antoniewicz looks to get the team’s first win under his belt as the Spartans take on the Gamecocks of USC on Friday, August 29th at 7:00pm in Columbia.
Led by a plethora of freshmen mixed with upperclassmen, the Spartans will begin conference play on Saturday, September 20th as they play their I-26 rivals at UNC Asheville at home.
“We are a young team that have shown some fantastic things in the last 3 weeks,” Antoniewicz said of his expectations for this season. “On the other hand, we have a lot of growing and maturing to do. We want to go into every game like it’s a cup final for us, and it’s up to myself and the staff to get the mentality right for 90 minutes. This is a program that has a background of success that the alumni have built, and I want to bring that back to the men’s soccer program. If we can continue to grow and mature as the season progresses, we can find ourselves in a really good situation. We have the talent and are really excited to keep pushing these guys to grow as individuals but, more importantly, as a team.”
After the matchup against the Gamecocks, the Spartans are back at home on Labor Day as they take on the Blazers of The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
All games on campus at County University Soccer Stadium are free to attend courtesy of Ingles, and concessions are available.
